Sustainable Church Buildings Project

The Sustainable Church Buildings Project 2023-24 is a Cloudesley initiative, run in partnership with the Islington Deanery and the Diocese of London.

The project is running from July 2023 to December 2024. It is open to the eligible Church of England churches within the Islington Deanery. We are unable to accept applications from churches outside this area of benefit.

The project consists of:

  • Expert advice and support – Cloudesley has commissioned Inspired Efficiency to provide bespoke advice and support to help Islington Church of England churches take part in this project
  • Small Grants – all eligible churches can apply for a non-competitive grant of up to £10,000 for sustainability and net zero carbon measures
  • Large Grants – a small number of larger grants are available on a competitive basis.

The project builds on our 2017-18 Sustainable Church Buildings Project, and utilises the AECOM audit reports that were produced as part of that.

Signing up

Eligible Islington churches which would like to take part in the project will need to complete an online form providing lead contact details and giving consent for their information to be shared.

Expert advice and support

Cloudesley has commissioned Inspired Efficiency to help churches take part in this project. Once your church has signed up, we will provide them with a copy of your 2017-18 audit report.

The support from Inspired Efficiency includes:

  • A review of your AECOM audit, including an online meeting with your church to review actions and progress and to provide updated advice
  • Up to seven hours of bespoke project development support
  • If recommended, an onsite decarbonisation audit might also be carried out.

Small Grants

Small Grants

Following Inspired Efficiency’s review of your AECOM audit and your online meeting with them, eligible churches can apply for a Small Grant of up to £10,000. The grant can be used for projects which will help your church reduce its carbon footprint or improve sustainability. You can find more details about the Small Grants, including how to apply, in the Small Grants Guidelines below.

If you are disabled and the application form is inaccessible for you, access bursaries are available to help pay for support to complete it.

Large Grants

As part of the project, Cloudesley will also be agreeing a small number of Large Grants for particularly impactful projects. The funding process for the Large Grants will run alongside the Spring 2024 main church funding round, with churches being able to apply to both funds at the same time.

You can find full details of the criteria and application process for the Large Grants in the Guidelines below.
